WWE Wrestlemania 40 Day 1 Highlights: Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins vs The Rock and Roman Reigns
On the first day of WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins were defeated by The Rock and Roman Reigns, which severely damaged Rhodes’ hopes of winning the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. As per the agreement, Cody would now face Reigns in a Bloodline Rules match on Day 2 if Rhodes and Rollins lose, which they did. This implies that anything goes. It might be three on one, five on one, or even two on one. and nobody, not even Cody Rhodes or Seth Rollins, can change it.
"The Rock threatened that if Rhodes and Rollins do not answer the challenge, the story would tragically end"
The Rock countered Rhodes’ first challenge for a one-on-one fight by proposing that Rhodes and Rollins face him and Reigns in a tag match on WrestleMania Saturday. The Bloodline will be prohibited from ringside for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Match if Rhodes and Rollins win. However, the main event title battle the next night will become “Bloodline Rules,” meaning everything goes as long as The Head of the Table and The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment win.
WWE Wrestlemania 40 Day 1 Highlights
Rollins attacks Reigns, and Rhodes grabs The Rock. Rollins and Rhodes hit Reigns and The Rock with stereo Pedigrees! 1… 2… Reigns and Rock kick out! Unreal!
To recover, Reigns and The Rock exit the ring. In the ring, Rhodes and Rollins plot. Rollins uses a cross-body plancha on Reigns to exit the top rope. Rhodes strikes The Rock from the opposite side of the ring. After swiftly interrupting Rhodes, The Rock moves the commentary table aside. The Rock spits water on Rhodes after taking a swig. The Rock yells at Rhodes’ mother while lifting Rhodes. The Rock sets up for a Rock Bottom by putting Rhodes on the table! To stop The Rock, Rollins clutches his ankle. Rhodes smashes The Rock with a Rock Bottom through the table after giving The Rock an elbow to the head! Whoa! Then, Reigns throws Rollins to the ground and PURPOSES him through the barrier! Stupid!
Rolling a motionless Rock into the ring, Rhodes gets him to his feet. When Rhodes enters the ring, Reigns delivers a Drive-by Dropkick to him! As soon as Reigns reaches the apron, The Rock tags the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. After pulling himself into the ring, Reigns is clumsy. Rhodes gets a boot to the head from Reigns, who then yells at the throng that Rhodes has no place here. Rhodes gets punched in the face by Reigns. Reigns keeps hitting Rhodes in the face with punches. Rhodes eventually stops one. They start trading big right hands less than a day before they do on WrestleMania Sunday.
Suddenly, Rhodes grabs him and strikes Cross Rhodes! Rhodes appears and hits another Cross Rhodes! When Rhodes gets up for a third, The Rock uses the weightlifting belt to give him a sharp backhand! Rhodes gives way in agony. Reigns throws a spear at Rhodes! On the apron is The Rock. Reigns annotates him. Entering the ring, The Rock assesses Rhodes. Rhodes is having trouble standing. After stalking his victim, The Rock delivers a Rock Bottom to Rhodes! The Rock approaches Rhodes from his shoulders, runs a finger down his throat, and then raises one finger into the air.
He then looks over to Rhodes’ mother and says, “This one is for you, Mama Rhodes.” The Rock connects with the People’s Elbow on Rhodes and covers. 1… 2… 3! Michael Cole exclaims, “Cody is screwed!”
Leading into Wrestlemania XL, the main storyline of interest has been none other than The Rock’s involvement in Rhodes’ WWE Championship feud with Reigns. The story of Rhodes finally overcoming Reigns to win his first world title after coming up short at Wrestlemania 39 was already interesting enough; however, adding The Rock into the mix has brought it up a whole another level.
In fitting fashion, The Rock pulled out all the stops to deliver his team (and his family) the win on the first night of Wrestlemania. Those “stops” included threatening the referee’s job to prevent a count out and using the belt to hit Rhodes towards the end of the match before delivering a Rock Bottom and People’s Elbow to pin “The American Nightmare.”
With a newsworthy Night 1 of WWE WrestleMania 40 in the books, the bar has been set for an equally exciting Night 2.
Roman Reigns’ rematch with Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship is the most anticipated match of the evening and for good reason. The Bloodline Rules stipulation allows for interference and any other chaos that’s sure to be in store.
